The Ajax women’s football team was eliminated in the first preliminary round of the Champions League. Hesterine de Reus’ team lost 1-0 to Fiorentina in the final of a mini-tournament in Brøndby, Denmark. The match was about a place in the second preliminary round of the Champions League.
The Italian team took the lead eight minutes before the end through Madelen Janogy. Janogy left goalkeeper Regina van Eijk without a chance with a beautiful shot. Earlier, the Swedish attacker of Fiorentina had already been dangerous with an effort against the underside of the crossbar. Ajax managed to create few clear-cut chances against the number 3 of last season’s Serie A. A final offensive by the Amsterdam women yielded nothing, which meant that Fiorentina qualified for the second preliminary round.
Last year Ajax reached the quarter finals of the Women’s Champions League.
