Director Matt Reeves has revealed some interesting story details about The Batman 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2022 hit.
The movie The Batman 2 will revolve around the corruption of Gotham and it seems that things are going to be much more difficult for the Dark Knight played by Robert Pattinson. This is how he explained it Matt Reeves in a recent interview with SFX Magazine.
“We’ve shared the script as we’ve been going with DC, and they’re super excited. It’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption and go into places that Bruce Wayne couldn’t even anticipate in the first one.
«The seeds of where this is going are all in the first movie and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character that you never get to see. Batman is constantly struggling with these forces. But those forces can’t be completely exorcised. So the next movie will delve deeper into that.»
«The important thing for me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythical characters that everyone knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world. We could push ourselves to the edge of the fantastical, but we would never go into something completely fantastical. It’s meant to feel quite grounded.»
“It doesn’t mean you won’t see characters that people love. That’s exactly what we want to do in The Batman 2. Gentleman Ghost is probably pushed too far for us to find a way to do it, but there’s a fun way to think about how we would take characters that might cross over into the a little bit of the fantastical and find a way to make sense of that.”
Mattson Tomlin, the co-writer, confirmed that they will begin filming in 2025.
«The Batman 2 is shooting next year. We are preparing for it, and I will say that expectations simply could not be higher.»
“It’s the sequel to the first one. But also, Matt Reeves is like no other. In the five years that I’ve been working with him as closely as I have, I’ve tried to absorb as much as possible from him, and I’m so grateful for the time that I get to spend with him, because he’s a true artist who’s operating in a world where sometimes art doesn’t flourish, and he’s trying to do something that really matters. Just being along for the ride and being a part of that process, it’s pretty incredible, pretty tremendous.”
Rumors about new enemies.
There’s speculation that The Batman 2 will introduce the Court of Owls. Which would be pretty cool since they’re a secret organization in the DC Comics universe, particularly in Batman stories. They were created by writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, first appearing in Batman #3 (2011) during The New 52 relaunch. Over the years, the Court of Owls has been recognized as one of the most mysterious and powerful threats within Gotham City’s mythology.
The Court of Owls is comprised of the city’s richest and most powerful families, who use their influence to manipulate events and maintain their hold on Gotham. Throughout time, the Court has operated underground, with no one, not even Batman, ever knowing of its existence. Their mission is to preserve their power and ensure that Gotham is under their absolute control.
They’re villains that would fit very well into the tone that Matt Reeves is giving to The Batman 2, so it will be interesting to discover everything they have prepared. We’ll find out when the film is released. October 2, 2026.
