Despite mass layoffs and other controversies, the video game industry is experiencing one of its best times. We say this because in recent years, titles have debuted that captivated audiences and became instant classics. Just like in 2023, the competition for the coveted GOTY will be very tight in 2024. Now, a new contender has entered the scene.
We’re talking about Astro Bot, the first instalment in the franchise that emerged as tech demos for PlayStation consoles and peripherals. Its official release will take place on September 6, but some members of the press have already provided their reviews and ratings.
So, TeamASOBI’s latest project has fared very well and is currently at the top of Metacritic.

Astro Bot Becomes the Highest-Rated Full Game of 2024 on Metacritic
The ambitious new PlayStation 5 exclusive boasts an impressive average rating of 94 on Metacritic. This score is based on 111 reviews, so it’s likely to rise or fall as more outlets and critics weigh in with their reviews.
In this way, Astro Bot became the highest-rated video game of 2024 so far. This means that it managed to surpass the also exclusive Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the metroidvania Animal Well, the indie title Balatro and the controversial remake of The Last of Us: Part II.
It’s important to clarify, though. TeamASOBI’s platformer is the highest-rated brand new game of 2024 on Metacritic at the time of writing; however, it’s not the highest-rated release of the year. That honor belongs to Shadow of the Erdtree, the expansion for the popular ELDEN RING that earned a score of 95 on Metacritic.

Either way, Astro Bot is likely to be a strong GOTY contender at The Game Awards and beyond. It will be interesting to see if any other titles debut in the coming months that manage to top it.
Whether the PS5 platformer performs as well commercially remains to be seen, but its developers will be releasing more content and other new features to increase replayability.
