Today, the court in Rotterdam will hear the case of the abuse of a 10-year-old girl from Vlaardingen for the first time. Her foster parents are on trial on suspicion of attempted manslaughter and serious assault.
Today’s hearing is a pro forma, meaning that the case will not yet be dealt with in substance. The two 37-year-old suspects, Daisy W. and Johnny van den B., are not expected to be present in court themselves.
In addition to attempted manslaughter and serious assault, the foster parents are also suspected of deprivation of liberty and placing or leaving someone in a helpless state.
The case came to light after the girl was admitted to hospital in the night of 20 to 21 May, seriously injured and unresponsive. It later emerged that the girl herself had previously told people that she was being abused at home.
Situation worrying
Little is known about the girl’s current condition. In June, the child’s biological family announced that she had been discharged from the hospital and transferred to a medical center specializing in rehabilitation care.
The girl was no longer in danger of dying, but there was still a lot of uncertainty about her recovery. The statement said the situation remained worrying.
The biological mother and her family still have many unanswered questions about how the girl’s situation could have gotten to this point. The family hopes that the various investigations into the circumstances that led to the girl’s physical and mental condition can provide answers.
