It’s well known that Batman has been cleaning up crime on the streets of Gotham for quite a few years now, so it’s not uncommon for Bruce Wayne to be forced to face off against massive forces that a normal citizen wouldn’t be prepared for. Over the years of taking on the role of Gotham’s protector, Batman has taken his share of bullets and blows from a myriad of enemies. But now DC has confirmed how he’s able to withstand that damage, and that’s because Batman trained his body to feel all that pain without filtering it out in some way.
Batman reveals why he decided to feel extreme pain in his position as a hero
The shocking way Batman’s body handles pain was revealed as part of a surprising sneak peek for The Penguin #12. In this issue, the Dark Knight appears to be on his way to saving the Penguin from his daughter, but that doesn’t stop him from having to go through an army of criminals to do so.
While it’s true that being shot or stabbed hurts, the body has its own defense mechanisms to enter what is known as a state of shock, the purpose of which is to dull the pain. But that also dulls other parts essential to staying active in a life-or-death fight. For this very reason, Batman confirms that he has trained his body to never go into shock, meaning that he feels every shot and every stab he receives in an indescribable way.
The truth is, it’s a bit of a stretch to describe how much danger Batman is exposed to on a nightly basis. The hero has to deal with criminals who are armed with knives, bats, or even guns. This list doesn’t even include his own gallery of DC villains, who are equipped with specialized weapons, like the Penguin or the Joker. Despite what you might first imagine, Batman has taken a risky approach to enduring the pain.
When Batman is constantly faced with dangerous situations, he has to be able to make decisions as quickly as possible, otherwise thousands of innocent people could die. That’s why he can’t afford to calm down when he’s being stabbed or shot, so he’s simply trained himself to feel all the pain he feels.
This is a bit of an intense solution, but it’s not surprising that Batman would go to great lengths to save Gotham. Just because he has the mind of the world’s greatest detective, it makes sense that Batman wouldn’t want to resort to techniques that could cloud his judgment, but feeling every blow he takes is a somewhat radical solution that shows just how committed Batman is as a hero.
