Showrunner explains why Charles sees Sazz’s ghost in season 4 Only Murders In The Building
Showrunner John Hoffman explains that Charles saw Sazz’s ghost in Only Murders in the Buildingseason 4, episode 2. Premiering August 27, the final season of Hulu’s Emmy-winning murder mystery series sees the three true-crime podcasters investigating the murder of Charles’ stunt double, Sazz, who was shot by an unknown assailant at the end of Season 3. Only Murders in the Building, Season 4, Episode 2, Charles is visited by the ghost of Sazz as he tries to process his grief over her death.
In an interview with The Wrap, Hoffman explained that Charles saw Sazz’s ghost during Season 4, Episode 2 of Only Murders in the BuildingThe showrunner says Charles may have taken his relationship with Sazz for granted, and the loss of his friend adds to this weight, which he has a hard time processing. Hoffman also praised Jane Lynch’s performance, particularly highlighting her work later in the season.
“I think going into that relationship, Charles may have assumed that she could have been mistaken for him, and that adds to the weight of it all, that he can’t really look at. “The only way to process it is with your friend who is no longer here. That keeps it light and it’s wonderfully profound, I hope,” he said.
“When I talked to Jane Lynch about this terrible twist that was going to happen at the end of Season 3 for Sazz, she lit up. God bless her. She just lit up. Wait to see what’s next. I think she’s magnificent this season. She kills me and she’s funny, but I think she’s doing one of the best jobs I’ve seen her do,” he added.
Why does Charles see the ghost of Sazz in Only Murders In The Building, season 4, episode 2?
During the season 3 finale of Only Murders in the BuildingSazz is shot and killed by an unknown assailant in Charles’ apartment. As his stunt double, Sazz bears a striking resemblance to Charles, so it’s highly likely that she was mistaken for him. As Hoffman mentions, this only adds to the pain Charles feels over Sazz’s murder, knowing that he was likely the intended target. To make matters worse, Sazz is no longer around for Charles to talk to and help him process the pain he’s feeling.
In terms of the show’s timeline, Charles and Sazz are one of the longest-running relationships between characters, having been his stunt double since his time on Brazzos. In turn, Sazz’s murder adds a more personal element to the show, as none of the previous murder victims had significant personal relationships with the three main characters: Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. While Mabel was a childhood friend of Tim Kono, they had a falling out prior to his murder and were not friends at the time of his death.
Given that Hoffman praises Lynch’s performance in upcoming episodes, it seems like Sazz will return at some point later this season, either in ghost form or flashbacks. Regardless, Sazz’s presence in Season 4 should continue to deepen Charles’ emotional journey. His return should also drive the narrative forward as the trio uncover more clues about Sazz’s murder and ultimately offer Charles a chance to close the chapter in Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building.
