Neck and shoulder pain is a common problem among people, especially when they wake up from sleep. This is often due to sleeping in an awkward position, improper mattress support or sleep disturbance.
“Movement helps keep our joints lubricated and our muscles flexible,” physical therapist Susan Winograd told Fit & Well. “If you find yourself waking up in pain, move. Movement is the best medicine.”
“If you’re not sure where to start, try these stretches to relieve stiff neck and shoulders in the morning,” she added.
Neck rotation: It is recommended to sit up straight and then slowly rotate your head in a circular motion. Do 5-10 slow rotations in each direction. This movement gently moves the neck and improves its flexibility. Arm rotation: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms extended to the sides, then try rotating your arms, gradually increasing the size of the circles. It is recommended to do 10 circles forward, then 10 circles backward. This movement aims to warm up the shoulders and improve blood circulation. Back arch: Sit on your hands and knees, then inhale and arch your back, like a cat position. This position relaxes the spine, shoulders and neck.
