Every now and then, young people go wild at a party, like in the new Netflix proposal that is currently a hit.
Inexperienced (Incoming) It is a teenage comedy of Netflix which follows a familiar but effective formula: that of a crazy night where the young characters face unexpected situations, full of humor and chaos. This story, directed by Dave y John Cherninknown for their work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is another addition to the subgenre of youth films such as Superbad and Booksmart.
The plot revolves around Benj, played by Mason Thames, a nerdy and well-meaning teenager who has a crush on Bailey (Isabella Ferreira), the best friend of his older sister, Alyssa (Ali Gallo). Benj and his friends try to navigate the complexities of the first day of high school. On the other hand, his sister Alyssa is dealing with her own drama: she has just been dumped by her girlfriend and, in an attempt to get over the breakup, she becomes obsessed with improving her physical appearance, believing that cosmetic surgery could solve her emotional problems.
It’s all about one big party.
As the story unfolds in this Netflix film, Benj and his three best friends, Eddie (Ramon Reed), Connor (Raphael Alejandro), and Danah “Koosh” Koushani (Bardia Seiri), find themselves caught up in a series of chaotic events. Koosh, who comes from a wealthy family, struggles to emerge from the shadow of his older brother, who is extremely popular at school. So he wants to prove his worth by organizing a huge back-to-school party, which becomes the focus of the action.
The story stands out not only for its humor, but also for the authenticity of its characters. The young people in the Netflix film are not perfect; they are messy, sometimes rude, and make mistakes, which makes them more real and relatable. This approach brings freshness to the narrative, setting it apart from other teen comedies that often portray more idealized characters.
Over the course of the night, Benj and his friends embark on various adventures. Benj tries to win Bailey’s affections, which leads to embarrassing and comical situations. Meanwhile, Eddie and Connor get caught up in a series of misadventures around town, including babysitting Katrina, the most popular girl in school, who ends up in a sorry state after drinking too much at the party.
The young actors show that they have a great future in the industry.
One of the Netflix film’s strongest points is its cast. Mason Thames shines in the role of Benj, capturing the essence of a shy and determined teenager at the same time. His chemistry with the other actors, especially with the character of Koosh, is top notch. Additionally, the chemistry teacher, Mr. Studebaker, played by Bobby Cannavale, brings additional humor with his irresponsible and often inappropriate behavior, which oscillates between questionable and downright hilarious.
The Netflix film also manages to balance humor with deeper messages about friendship, self-acceptance, and the consequences of our actions. Although the characters sometimes find themselves in absurd situations, Inexpertos does not forget to show that every action has a reaction, and that the decisions we make, no matter how small they may seem, can have a significant impact.
Despite its strengths, Beginners isn’t perfect. Some subscribers to the streaming platform might feel that the ending leaves a bit to be desired, especially when it comes to Benj’s arc. However, the journey is what really counts in this film, and Netflix delivers an entertaining and ultimately satisfying experience.
