Robin breaks the Dark Knight’s only rule about not taking the lives of enemies in new comic DC vs. Vampires: World War V #1where Damian carries some new katanas
When we think of Batman’s strict moral code, one of the first things that comes to mind is his famous “No Killing Rule.” This principle, which has guided the actions of the Dark Knight and the entire Bat-Family for decades, seems to have vanished into an alternate reality where vampires are the primary threat. In a striking and memorable variant cover for the upcoming series, DC vs. Vampires: World War VRobin not only defies this rule, but does so with a bloodthirsty relish that would probably make his late father roll in his grave.
The Dark Side of Robin
The variant cover, created by artist Riley Rossmo, shows Damian Wayne, the current Robin, wielding two blood-covered katanas, a wicked grin adorning his face. All around him, decapitated vampire remains cascade down, making it clear that this young hero has no qualms about spilling the blood of the undead. While this kind of violence might be tolerated in a context where vampires are an apocalyptic threat, for those familiar with Batman’s history and philosophy, this image is nonetheless disturbing.
On August 14, 2024, the first issue of DC vs. Vampires: World War Va highly anticipated sequel to the series DC vs. Vampires that won over fans. This new chapter, from acclaimed creators Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt, promises to delve deeper into the war for humanity’s survival, all while the planet faces a new Ice Age. But is this the true threat or does the real danger lie in the souls of those fighting to save the world?
Robin and his relentless thirst for blood
Damian Wayne’s return to action is not surprising for fans of DC vs. Vampireswhere he’s already demonstrated his willingness to take down vampires without batting an eyelid. However, in this new installment, it’s hinted that his brutality will reach new levels, something that’s clearly reflected in Rossmo’s cover art. The choice of katanas as Damian’s weapons is significant; while it’s a weapon that’s always been associated with him, its use has been less frequent in recent stories in DC’s main continuity. So seeing them again, and in such a violent manner, is a reminder of the lethal nature that Robin can unleash when he sets his mind to it.
In this story set on Earth-63, an alternate version of our universe, Batman’s rules still apply, but the vampire invasion forced the Bat-Family to rethink their principles. However, what began as a need for survival could be leading Damian down a dangerous path, where the act of killing becomes easier and easier, even when the targets are no longer vampires. This was evident in DC vs. Vampires Vol. 2when Robin didn’t hesitate to take down Two-Face, an act that highlights Batman’s argument about how easy it is to fall down a slippery slope once that moral line is crossed.
Vampires and the Batman Rule
From the traditional Batman perspective, there is a debate over whether vampires should fall under his “No Killing Rule.” Throughout Batman’s history, DC vs. Vampirescharacters like Damian and Kate Kane have shown that vampires, despite their nature, are not inherently evil and can coexist with humanity without being a constant threat. This is especially seen in Damian’s relationship with Alfred Pennyworth and his ongoing grief over the loss of his family, suggesting that despite his transformation, his humanity remains intact.
This moral dilemma adds a layer of complexity to the plot of World War VIf Batman were alive, would he approve of his son’s methods? Probably not. To the Dark Knight, life is sacred, even those who appear to have no soul. In a universe where vampires can retain their humanity, the line between good and evil is blurred, making Robin’s choices all the more controversial and tragic.
The launch of DC vs. Vampires: World War V #1 promises not only to expand the story of this epic struggle, but also to test the limits of what it means to be a hero in a world where the rules have changed drastically.
