It just worked out: FC Bayern won its opening Bundesliga match in Wolfsburg 3-2. The victory was harder for the Munich team than they would have liked. In the 20th minute, the German record champions took a 1-0 lead through Jamal Musiala. Up until halftime, there was absolutely no indication that Bayern could stumble.
The picture was completely different at the start of the second period. Wolfsburg turned the game around within 10 minutes. Lovro Majer scored twice (47th and 55th minutes). The Croatian scored the first of his two goals from a penalty, after Sacha Boey had brought down Tiago Tomas in the penalty area and Alphonso Davies had cancelled the offside on the far side. The second goal was preceded by a mistake by Min-Jae Kim. Afterwards, there was heated debate online about the quality of Bayern’s defense – especially in light of the recent departure of Matthijs de Ligt.
However, the mistakes did not cost Bayern any points that day. Ten minutes after falling behind, Bayern equalized, the ball rolled over the line after a corner, and at first it was not clear who had scored the goal. The DFL classified the goal as an own goal by Jakub Kaminski. In the 82nd minute, it was Serge Gnabry who finally made the final score with a shot from a tight angle and prevented Bavaria’s first loss of points on the first matchday since 2021 (1:1 in Mönchengladbach).
Bayern fans were left with mixed feelings. On the one hand, they were happy about the late victory, but on the other hand they were worried that the weaknesses they showed would continue throughout the season and that the team would not be ready to take on champions Bayer Leverkusen.
