Chainsaw Man is one of the most successful manga of today and has served to make its creator, Tatsuki Fujimoto, one of the most popular and followed authors of the moment. The notoriety that he has achieved is such that Look Back, one of his most personal works to date, was adapted and brought to the big screen just a few months ago, achieving an excellent reception by critics and viewers.
It’s no secret that Chainsaw Man is full of references, many of them present in the popular opening that accompanied each episode of its first season. These are evidence of Fujimoto’s great love for the world of cinema and for some great gems of the 90s. However, there is one reference that went unnoticed by many viewers and that pays homage to Gyo, the seinen manga published by Junji Ito in 2001.
Chainsaw Man’s Fish Demon has a design similar to Gyo’s fish.
The reference we are discussing occurs throughout episode 5 of the anime, specifically in a scene in which Aki Hayakawa, accompanied by his partner Himeno, extracts a bullet from inside the corpse of the Fish Demon that they quickly associate with the Gun Demon, one of the most powerful demons in the entire work.
If we pay attention to the design of the Fish Demon that is under Aki we discover several peculiarities in it, such as its enormous size, the two tails it has and most importantly, that it has very thin legs similar to those of the fish that appear in Gyo.
As with Ito’s other works, Gyo is notable for its twisted plot twists. Its plot introduces us to Tadashi and his girlfriend Kaori, who have discovered and ended the life of a small fish with artificial limbs and small tubes attached to its body.
Fans of this horror mangaka are currently eagerly awaiting the premiere of the adaptation of Uzumaki, one of his most recognized and critically acclaimed works. This new anime will consist of 4 episodes produced by Production IG and will feature Hiroshi Nagahama as director, who has already worked on such notable anime as Mushishi. It will premiere on September 28.
