The MaXine trilogy is a fascinating horror saga created by Ti West and starring Mia Goth, which has been a huge success in cinemas.
Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD. The Maxine saga is a captivating and disturbing trilogy that mixes horror, broken dreams and violence. Each film explores different eras and facets of the dark world of cinema, telling the story of Maxine Minx (Mia Goth), a young woman obsessed with achieving fame, and Pearl, a woman trapped in her own past.
X (2022) is the first chapter and takes us back to 1979, where a group of young filmmakers arrive at a farm in Texas to film an adult movie. What begins as a clandestine shoot quickly turns into a nightmare. Pearl (also played by Mia Goth), the elderly owner of the farm, represses an unfulfilled desire for youth and beauty, unleashing a brutal massacre. Maxine, the protagonist, is the only survivor, narrowly escaping the clutches of the deadly elderly couple.
In Pearl (2022), the story goes back to 1918, exploring the origin of the villain. Pearl (Mia Goth), trapped on a farm with her family during World War I, dreams of being a famous dancer, but her life falls apart into a spiral of madness and violence when her aspirations are thwarted. This episode shows us how ambition and repression can become a deadly combination.
All for fame.
Finally, in Maxxxine (2024), we return to the 1980s, where Maxine, now an adult film star, attempts to leave her dark past behind and achieve fame in Hollywood. However, her life is threatened by a religious cult led by her own father, a fanatic who sees her as a symbol of the sin that Hollywood has imposed. The final confrontation between Maxine and her father closes the saga, with Maxine willing to do anything to secure her stardom, even if it means facing and overcoming her own legacy of violence.
Film director Ti West manages to combine the classic slasher with deep explorations of the desires, fears and traumas that haunt his characters, creating a trilogy that, in addition to being scary, offers a disturbing reflection on the search for fame and the dark obsessions that it can unleash. In addition, Mia Goth proves that she is a perfect actress for horror films.
