Strengths
The Transalp 700 It has been one of the most popular models with the public for years and still is, despite having been out of production for a long time. Indeed, the arrival of the new Transalp, successfully presented at EICMA, has even rekindled interest in the “old” 700 in these pages equipped with the engine with the cylinders arranged in a V (the new one has a parallel twin): an indestructible engine, which eats up the miles without ever complaining and has a smooth and easy-to-handle delivery. The Transalp is easy to ride even for those who don’t have much experience and the 19-inch front wheel allows you to tackle even light dirt roads without problems. The riding position is comfortable and the passenger has enough space. The tight turning radius and slim sides (which allow you to put your feet down confidently) allow the Transalp to get by without problems even in the city.
Weak points
Performance is quiet, so-so fuel consumption also affected by the lack of sixth gear. Those who often go on the highway should mount a raised windshield, the standard one protects little. There is some vibration at high revs, but it is not too annoying. Some plastics are rather cheap.
Check carefully before purchasing
Exhaust: passes under the engine and is exposed to impacts, especially off-road. Steering bearings: check that the steering turns without sticking from one side to the other. The bearings must be carefully adjusted every 6,000 kilometers. Brake discs: the front ones are a bit delicate: check that they are in order. Clutch: if mistreated it doesn’t last long, but used with a bit of care it is almost “eternal”: it can easily exceed 50,000 kilometers. Spark plug caps: they can cause some ignition problems. If the engine has irregular delivery, check them carefully: they may need to be replaced.

The instrumentation has a “cheap” look but offers everything you need. The rev counter is a needle, while the LCD screen contains the speedometer, odometer, clock and fuel gauge.

How much does a used Transalp cost?
Considering that it has been out of production for about ten years, the Transalp has held its value very well. In any case, today as new it is a good deal for those who sell it and those who buy it. It is one of those models that are always popular and always sought after: in the coming years it is unlikely that the prices will drop much further. Better if you find a model with ABS, but they are rare and more sought after.
Prices from 1,900 to 2,200 euros
