For the second time this week, there are concerns in Germany about sabotage of drinking water at a military base. First, a military base at Cologne Airport had to close because of a hole in the fence and ‘abnormal values’ in the water. Now, a second military base has also been warned, along with some 10,000 residents of the German town of Mechernich.
In Mechernich, a town with about 30,000 inhabitants 50 kilometers south of Cologne, a hole was found in a fence of a drinking water supply yesterday. The municipality has called on part of the town not to drink tap water, first it has to be investigated whether there is something wrong with the water.
The case is receiving a lot of attention in Germany because a German military base is also connected to the reservoir.
Possible contamination
Earlier this week, a base near Cologne was closed. At that military base, which employs 4,300 soldiers and 1,200 civilians, the drinking water may have been contaminated after someone allegedly entered the base.
This base has since reopened, but ‘abnormal values’ were found in the drinking water. The tap water may therefore not be drunk. It is not clear what exactly was wrong with the water.
