PC as a platform has indeed gone through a “dark period” where every giant publisher who was optimistic about the popularity of their franchise ended up launching their own launcher. The motivation was of course simple, avoiding the 30% revenue sharing system with Steam which is now the most popular digital platform for PC games. Some publishers even made their latest releases exclusive and could only be purchased on their launcher, although in the end, quite a few of them “returned” to Steam. If you are a gamer who wants to enjoy Civilization later without being “disturbed” by the 2K Launcher, this is the happy news you have been waiting for.
If you are a gamer who is currently enjoying Civilization VI and looking forward to Civilization VII which has been confirmed through a short teaser, this is the happy news that you have been waiting for. Via their official post on Reddit, Firaxis Community Manager confirmed that the need to use the 2K Launcher has finally been removed from the Steam version of Civilization VI. He also confirmed that Civilization VII will not need the 2K Launcher. This decision was certainly welcomed with open arms by the community.
2K Games and Firaxis themselves plan to release Civilization VII in 2025 with the first gameplay mystery to be introduced at Gamescom 2024 this time. What about you? Are you happy to welcome this news?
