Five years after he was signed for a whopping €55 million, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is leaving Manchester United. The right-back is moving to league rivals West Ham, where he has signed a seven-year contract until 2031.
The Red Devils have to accept a hefty transfer fee: How Sky reported, the Hammers are transferring “only” 17.5 million euros to Manchester. The club did not officially disclose the transfer fee.
ManUtd will immediately invest the money in a new right-back: Wan-Bissaka’s departure has finally cleared the way for Noussair Mazroaui, who will move from FC Bayern to Old Trafford. The transfer fee for the Moroccan is said to be 15 million euros plus five million euros in bonuses.
Curiously, FC Bayern had actually already agreed with West Ham about a Mazraoui transfer. However, because the full-back did not want to move to the Hammers, they finally switched to Wan-Bissaka.
“For me it was a no-brainer to go to West Ham – I’m excited and happy to be here,” said the Hammers’ new number 29. “It’s a great feeling to be back in London and I’m excited about what’s to come. I was born here and know London inside out, so it means a lot to me to be playing in this city again,” Wan-Bissaka continued.
West Ham’s sporting director Tim Steidten added: “I am delighted that we have been able to secure Aaron’s deal. He is exactly the type of player we want to bring to the club in the prime of his career. He is an incredibly talented defender who we rate very highly and who excels in one-on-one situations. He is also versatile, which is another plus. He has played over 170 Premier League games in his career and knows the league inside out.”
