Even though Robert Downey Jr. is still a few months away from landing Doctor Doom in the MCU, many fans of Marvel Studios’ films are relieved to know that his return has been confirmed. But the best part is that his return could also bring with it significant changes in regards to past productions in which he participated as Iron Man. Thus, the return of Robert Downey Jr. could present the perfect opportunity for a deleted scene from Avengers: Endgame to finally come to light.
Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom could bring to life a discarded scene from Avengers: Endgame
Robert Downey Jr. was the main face of the MCU from his debut in 2008’s Iron Man to his exit in Avengers: Endgame, which was released in 2019. It was that final Avengers installment that marked a major turning point for Tony Stark. Avengers: Endgame also revealed that Tony Stark was a father, but not all of Morgan Stark’s emotional moments with his father made it into the Phase 3 film.
While Avengers: Endgame officially introduced Morgan Stark, the film also marked his final appearance. Tony Stark sacrificed himself to save the universe from Thanos’ colossal onslaught, leaving Pepper Potts to care for their daughter, but Iron Man’s emotional exit was initially planned to play out in a scene alongside Morgan Stark against the backdrop of the Soul World.
This tender moment was ultimately cut from the final theatrical release, but Marvel Studios could now reimagine this deleted scene in the future of the MCU.
Just as Thanos had shared a moment with a young Gamora after his popular finger snap during Avengers: Infinity War, Tony Stark was set to star in a scene with a very similar tone. Apparently, Marvel Studios had filmed a scene in which Tony Stark met an older version of his daughter. This teenage version of Morgan Stark was played by star Katherine Langford, but her role was cut from the final cut of Avengers: Endgame before the film’s release.
A possible reunion with Morgan Stark as Doctor Doom
The Russo brothers explained that the scene was cut because there were already too many goodbyes for Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame. Including this scene would have broken the natural flow of the film, with a supposed goodbye with Morgan Stark, another for Spider-Man and Pepper Potts, and a final one at Tony Stark’s funeral. Katherine Langford said she agreed with the decision made by the leadership, but now that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU, it’s possible the actress might still be willing to do it.
The scene could also be given an unexpected and heartbreaking twist, as Morgan Stark would be forced to confront a villain who looks exactly like her deceased father. Since the Russo brothers cut her final scene in Avengers: Endgame, it’s possible they’re leaning towards bringing Morgan Stark back, but this would be a much more tragic reunion for her than meeting her father as originally planned.
