Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Devil in the White City has received an update after apparently being in development for over a decade. Based on the book that was written by Erik Larson, the production is set to tell the true story of architect Daniel Burnham and America’s first serial killer, HH Holmes. Despite Leonardo DiCaprio acquiring the film rights in 2010, development on the film has apparently been on hold since then.
The long-awaited adaptation of The Devil in the White City would take a new step forward
The Devil in the White City project was originally planned for a TV series on Hulu, but the streaming platform decided to move on in March 2023. Speaking to Deadline, producer Stacey Sher has offered a positive update on the future of The Devil in the White City, stating that the series will continue to move forward.
Most importantly, he confirmed that all the original people involved in the project would also remain involved. Of course, this would include Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio as producers.
This is the first positive update for the project in years, indicating the confidence that Stacey Sher has. The biggest development regarding this adaptation came in 2022, when it was announced that Keanu Reeves would be the one to star in it. In the end, in October of that same year, Keanu Reeves left the project and the promises to see this series come to fruition ended up in deaf ears.
Despite the negative circumstances the project currently finds itself in, Stacey Sher confirms that work is still underway and that all the original producers are still attached. However, since the series will no longer be backed by Hulu, anything could happen from here.
As far as we know, the plan is still to make a limited series, but the idea may have changed to turn it into the film that Leonardo DiCaprio originally envisioned.
Although it seems that the adaptation of The Devil in the White City is not cancelled despite its troubled development, the lack of concrete news about its production would imply a release in the distant future. For now, Martin Scorsese is directing a new film about Jesus while Leonardo DiCaprio is filming the police thriller The Battle of Baktan Cross. This is a clear indication that the adaptation is not a priority for either of them at the moment.
The adaptation of The Devil in the White City is not expected to be released until 2026.
