- Warning: spoilers for Fight Club
We live in a world in which there are a great number of ideologies, beliefs, traditions, laws… What is accepted in one place may not be accepted in another. This causes debates, conflicts and tensions on a daily basis, and cinema is not exempt from all this. The case of Fight Club in China describes these situations very well.
China is famous for its demands when it comes to making changes to films, from cutting scenes to slightly changing the message to suit its interests and/or beliefs. While it is not the only country to do this, it is the protagonist of this story.
David Fincher, responsible for Fight Clubsaw the ending of the film radically changed. Originally, the narrator (Edward Norton) gets rid of his alter ego Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and watches as several buildings collapse at the hands of Marla (Helena Bonham Carter). It represents that Tyler’s plan has succeeded despite everything.
Thanks to the tip provided by Tyler, the police quickly uncovered the entire plot and arrested the criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding. After the trial, Tyler was sent to an asylum for psychological treatment. He was released in 2012.
This story didn’t go down well with China, so they made changes to make the movie available for streaming services. They removed the ending and added the text overlay. It’s the complete opposite of the original ending. It was shared by @Lulamaybelle on Twitter in 2022 and a source from Vice confirmed that it happened. The movie got its ending back along with some scenes, but others were censored.
