New problems have hit Intel again. After the unstable 13th and 14th generation processor cases, Intel is also rumored to be sued by shareholders. Mass layoffs are also happening which are making the company’s condition chaotic.
The last thing they want to hear is that their long-held processor market share is slowly being eroded by competitors. Which is what is happening right now.
Intel Still Leads Processor Market Share, AMD Catches Up
Although not completely defeated by AMD, it seems that Intel has begun to lose its footing in the processor market share. According to research from Mercury Research, overall Intel is still leading, but AMD has experienced a significant increase in market share.
Data revealed by Mercury shows that Intel’s total x86 sales have indeed increased, but it is said that this is due to the stagnant sales of AMD console chips, especially the decline in the number of Xbox console sales. This could be the reason because the age of the console has also reached its maturity and fans are preparing to welcome its successor.
The sad thing is, AMD desktop processor sales increased to 23% in the second quarter of 2024. Last year, the figure was only 19.4%. Since the x86 processor players are only Intel and AMD, any increase for AMD means a decrease for Intel.
The same thing also applies in the laptop processor sector, AMD experienced an increase from 16.5% last year to 20.3% in the second quarter of this year. As for servers, AMD also experienced an increase from 18.6% to 24.1% this year.
Worrying for Intel
These numbers certainly translate to bad news for Intel. If the blue camp doesn’t do something, their number one market share position could be overtaken by the red camp.
Given the less than promising state of their latest processor, they have no choice but to rely on the next generation of processors, which hopefully won’t cause any problems either.
