A new theory linked to the MCU puts a radical twist on the classic origin story of Tony Stark that led him to become Iron Man. This would put a brutally dark twist on the imminent return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. As it is worth remembering, the first time the world saw the actor as a superhero was in 2008, a key moment for Marvel Studios in which he would take his first steps with a very resolute Iron Man.
A new theory from Marvel Studios suggests a dark twist in Robert Downey Jr.’s return.
Robert Downey Jr. played Tony Stark for over a decade, but his MCU portrayal seemed to conclude with his final sacrifice during the final minutes of Avengers: Endgame. With his return as Doctor Doom confirmed, Robert Downey Jr.’s run as Iron Man in Marvel Studios films could be in for a brutal twist.
Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers were responsible for confirming at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con that Robert Downey Jr. will reappear in the MCU, although he would not do so as the iconic Iron Man. Instead of taking on the role of Marvel’s armored hero, Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom as part of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
There’s also been some confusion as to how Robert Downey Jr. can return after playing Tony Stark for so many years, but a shocking new theory might suggest how, and it all has to do with the origin of the MCU’s first seed.
A new theory that has become quite popular on social media suggests that Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom could mirror Tony Stark’s Iron Man by wearing the same mask seen in the first Marvel Studios film.
As you may know, after being captured, Tony Stark was forced to forge the Iron Man armor in order to emerge unscathed from his captivity. He used this first suit to return home, and the creation of the mask was a huge event that would mark his life forever. In fact, it was big enough that we heard the sound of Tony Stark hitting metal again in Avengers: Endgame as the perfect closing to a cycle.
Doctor Doom’s mask could be inspired by the Mark I armor
Doctor Doom is well known for wearing a mask in most of his appearances in Marvel Comics. The villain uses it to hide the deep scars on his face that were produced during a failed experiment. In fact, Victor von Doom’s metallic appearance was created with the help of Tibetan monks, and he used this new suit to take over Latveria and become one of Marvel’s most powerful villains.
However, if Doctor Doom’s mask in the MCU is the same as the first mask worn by Iron Man, then Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the franchise could be even more shocking than it already appears to be. Robert Downey Jr. got used to acting behind a mask during his previous, long-running stint as Tony Stark on the big screen, and this could be replicated brilliantly if a new version of Tony Stark becomes Doctor Doom.
