There have been many cameos that we have been able to see throughout Deadpool and Wolverine. From old acquaintances to new characters never seen before on the big screen, we were able to enjoy great figures in action. However, several renowned actors fell by the wayside and did not manage to appear in the film, one of them being none other than Robert Downey Jr.
In an exclusive interview with American media IndieWire, the film’s co-writers, Rhett Reese y Paul Wernickrevealed that the legendary actor was set to appear in the film and even practiced a few lines alongside Reynolds. However, he ultimately ruled out the option for a very simple reason, albeit unknown to the writers at the time: Downey Jr. had secretly returned to Marvel to play Doctor Doom.
“We would have loved to have Downey. But at the same time, I think Marvel had this ace up their sleeve: He’s about to come back with this different character. So for him to be Tony Stark? Knowing that Doctor Doom was coming right after that? It just didn’t make sense.”
It’s likely that, had he not accepted the role of a villain in the MCU, Downey Jr. would have accepted without hesitation, given his fondness for the character. However, Marvel didn’t want to further confuse audiences by reintroducing him as Tony Stark and, two days after the premiere, announcing him as Doom.
Shortly after this response, the writers revealed that their true intention was to reunite the entire team of The Avengers to have an exchange of words with Wade Wilson. However, that plan was scrapped, and they opted for a much more direct, but equally effective and funny scene.
