One of Netflix’s most important action and science-fiction series is coming to an end with a season 4 focused on its characters. Goodbye, Umbrella Academy.
There are certain T.V. series those who are especially loved, simply because they have accompanied you for years and have taken you by the hand at some event.
In our case, the “marriage” with Netflix has always been accompanied first by Stranger Things and then by The Umbrella Academy, a series that amazed back in 2019 with its first season.
Now, the The Umbrella Academy season 4 It puts the finishing touch to a long five-year career, although it must be taken into account that It’s been two years since that season 3 that left such a good taste in our mouths.
In this last batch, only 6 episodes (compared to the usual 10, most likely to save costs) are responsible for closing the adventures of the pupils of Sir Reginald Hargreeves.
A much-needed initial summary sets the scene: Viktor, Klaus and company have ended up in a new timeline where, this time, they don’t even have powers.
Although it seems like the ultimate opportunity for everyone to build their own life at last, soon one strange fanatic organization called the Guardians seems to put everything in check.
These guardians believe that A big event called the Cleanup is about to arriveNeedless to say, the multiversal concept is more present than ever, but more as a plot background than as a mechanism for action.
Facing the usual protagonists and without the Sparrow academy in between, the new villains are The leaders of the Guardians, Doctors Gene and Jeanplayed by an always brilliant Nick Offerman (The Last of Us, Parks & Recreation) y Megan Mullaly (Will and Grace). Fun fact: they are both married in real life and that chemistry is evident on screen.
Without a doubt, they are the most enjoyable addition to a season that is satisfactory, but that has lost that surprise factor, that “chaos” which amazed us, especially, in seasons 1 and 3.
And it’s not because the main ingredients aren’t there: we have some Very stupid and creative action choreographies, always with that music video rhythm so typical of the series, as well as mysteries, drama and humor (a good twist for a Klaus who had perhaps already become too grotesque), but it may simply be that we are already somewhat “immunized” to this formula.
Another element that perhaps reduces the impact of the season is the fact that the characters have to reset their powers and sometimes completely change them. In the 6 episodes, there is not enough time to understand what each one can actually do and what is expected of them, because they themselves do not understand what is happening to them.
Once again, the love and personal plots are not very interesting, but there are two elements, besides the villains, that do help make the season worth remembering.
On the one hand, the concept of the subway station that Cinco discoversone that is pure Umbrella Academy for its mysterious and metaphysical concept. You’ll see.
On the other hand, the growing idea that This is the final season and we have to close italways reviewing everything we have witnessed on this trip.
In that sense, there are reflections on character progression and about the people you have met who will make you feel a good pinch of nostalgia if you have been there from the beginning, even in the music (let’s see who remembers where the final theme was playing).
We missed a little more tribute to Cha-cha and Hazel, as well as the memorable Pogo.but the musings on Reginald are very timely, for example.
Obviously, we are not going to tell you how the series ends, but we do confess that We really liked how the last sentences that are heard perfectly summarize the spirit of “Dysfunctional family, but a family nonetheless” of the series. You feel that exactly what had to happen happens, although the climax is a bit rushed because this season is shorter.
On a technical level, The special effects are at a very good level and we give kudos for the risky and crazy proposal of the climax In that sense, because perhaps in another series it would have seemed too far-fetched, but here, strangely, it makes sense.
Thus, the The Umbrella Academy season 4 falls short of the remarkable and intense events of season 3, but manages, with very satisfactory resultto lower the curtain on a series that deserved to reach the end and not fall into the “cancellation threat” of Netflix. In this timeline, The Hargreeves legacy has been successful.
