There are just a few days left until we can enjoy Borderlands, the live action adaptation of the franchise Gearbox. It will be next August 9th when we can flock to the movie theaters to see the result of Eli Roth’s production, but the truth is that no one is too happy for now.
And critics and specialized press who have already had a look at the film are not at all satisfied. As reported by ComicBook, the vast majority of media point out negative aspects, as is the case with GameSpot. “An absolutely boring and hackneyed experience that makes 2000s video game movies look like masterpieces“, they state from the publication.
“A complete disaster,” Loud and Clear Reviews emphasize, while Variety laments that “it’s strange to see Cate Blanchett in a mediocre video game movie.” The truth is that the previous reactions are quite surprising, since what has been shown by Lionsgate inspired a lot of confidence. The sarcastic characters, the humor and the rather successful aesthetic seemed to be present in Borderlands, although it does not succeed in conquering.
“Fans will be pissed off at how poorly the characters have been portrayed (especially Tina), and casual audiences will be impressed by how much it feels like a half-replica of Guardians of the Galaxy“, notes Comics & Gaming Magazine. On the other hand, the cast does not have “an ounce of chemistry”, according to Adrian Caporusso, although it seems that the only positive note in the middle of all the chaos is Jack Black.
The actor is in charge of lending his voice to the robot Claptrap and in Movies We Texted they point out that “it is The only one that matches the energy that the game promises and the trailers”. We will see if all these opinions are really true after passing through the filter of our own eyes, but everything indicates that we are facing one of the most resounding failures of all of 2024.
