Discus thrower Rojé Stona has given Jamaica its first gold medal of the Games. The 25-year-old Stona reached a distance of 70.00 meters, beating Lithuanian favorite and world record holder Mykolas Alekna. Alekna reached 69.97 meters.
Stona improved the Olympic record and is the first Jamaican to win Olympic gold in this event. The bronze went to Australia’s Matthew Denny (69.31 meters).
In the men’s 400 meters, American Quincy Hall had a strong final shot. He passed several runners, the last being Briton Matthew Hudson-Smith. Hall took gold in a time of 43.40, Hudson-Smith recorded 43.44. Zambian Muzala Samukonga won bronze with 43.74.
