He was one of the shooting stars of the European Championship: Arda Güler. The 19-year-old was a key player in Turkey’s surprise quarter-final appearance. In the first game against Georgia, he scored one of the most beautiful goals of the tournament, a fantastic shot from 25 meters to make it 1-0. In the 2-1 victory against Austria in the round of 16, both Turkish goals came from a corner by Güler.
Will the Real Madrid man be rewarded for his strong performances with more playing time at the club next season? In the last La Liga season he was only allowed to play ten times for the Royals, and he didn’t even play a single game during the Champions League triumph. At the start of the season he was thrown off course by two long-term injuries.
So far, Güler has made a good impression in the pre-season, something that has not gone unnoticed by Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “He arrived very well, he worked hard during his vacation. He arrived stronger, more resilient and with the same quality,” said the Italian about the 19-year-old.
The impression could lead to a bigger role. “This season will be important for him, he will come more to the fore. Arda’s best position is between the lines, he can be a number ten, he can be a right midfielder. In the future he could be one of the three midfielders,” explained Ancelotti.
“I think the closer to the goal he plays, the better it is for the team. He is very effective, he scores a lot of goals in tight spaces, he has a special talent. He shows that best when he plays closer to the goal,” the Real coach continued.
However, the competition is still huge. In central midfield, Güler has to compete with Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde, among others. Rodrygo was a regular on the right wing last season. If Güler continues his recent performances, he still has a chance.
