National coach Aron Roijé was ecstatic after the gold medal of the 3×3 basketball players. Worthy de Jong took the Dutch team by the hand and threw the Dutch team to the Olympic title in overtime.
“I went completely crazy and jumped over the fence. This was not normal. It was such an exciting match, it should have been like this. We escaped miraculously,” Roijé said shortly after the final.
De Jong had forced overtime with a layup just before time expired. “He’s a very special player and very few guys can do what he can do,” said the overjoyed coach. “He can snake through the defense. He’s a huge athlete and a personality. Worthy has taken us to a higher level in recent years.”
France were defeated 18-17 in the final.
