Zeegers fears that the concerns of many Dutch beekeepers who approach the provinces are fueled by (social) media. According to him, there are a lot of ‘Indian stories’ going around there. He does not want to shortchange the beekeepers, who are right to worry about their bees. “I cannot prevent beekeepers from worrying, but there is insufficient evidence for this as far as the Asian Hornet is concerned, or at least, I have not seen it.” The researcher points to other matters that are more important. “There are very big problems in beekeeping: the use of pesticides, the decreasing flower density, I would be particularly concerned about that.”
