In a defining moment in the history of the Marvel Universe, Spider-Man has just defeated his official nemesis, the Green Goblin. And Peter Parker has done so in a victory that had been at least six decades in the making. This near-decisive fight would end with the Green Goblin dead, freeing Norman Osborn from his torment forever. While this is a huge feat for the hero, the consequences are likely to be just as influential at Marvel.
The conflict between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin could reach its definitive conclusion in Marvel
In The Amazing Spider-Man #54, Peter Parker became possessed by the spirit of the Green Goblin. Having nullified the Green Goblin’s hold on Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin has been doing everything in his power to possess Peter Parker, wanting to make his former enemy his new host. However, once the Green Goblin managed to enter Peter Parker’s mind, the villain found Spider-Man waiting for the fight that will decide the future of his life.
After enlisting the help of Norman Osborn and classic villain The Living Brain, Peter Parker uses his purity as one of Marvel’s most popular heroes to destroy the Green Goblin. This change comes as a huge shock to all readers, especially long-time fans of the character. Plus, Norman Osborn has been free of the Green Goblin for years, but it was assumed that the villain’s concentrated spirit would find its way back to him one way or another.
Now that we know that didn’t happen in the end, the Green Goblin made the decision to abandon his original host in order to try and take over Peter Parker’s consciousness, which ultimately led to his total destruction. Also, this isn’t the usual physical victory that Peter Parker might be used to, but rather a total ideological triumph over all the hatred that the Green Goblin represents in Marvel.
As the comic reaches its thrilling conclusion, it’s clear that a new day is dawning, as Spider-Man admits that he may be willing to befriend this new Norman Osborn seeking redemption.
Taking Norman Osborn back is an important symbol of what makes Spider-Man such an iconic hero. Peter Parker has always shown himself to be committed to saving everyone he can, no matter what they’ve done in the past. The new path that has been opened for Spider-Man is more than exciting, as the Green Goblin’s stunning defeat marks the beginning of a new era for Peter Parker.
The Amazing Spider-Man #54 comic is now available.
