It is well known that Spider-Man has hundreds of extremely notable villains, whom he has faced throughout his career, and although only the most powerful have been able to mark and leave a mark on his history, there are several others not so well-known who have also participated in some of his comics.
An example of such villains is none other than Spider-Man’s first Goblin, the well-known Proto-Goblin, introduced by Marvel almost 30 years ago, who has returned to the pages of comics, where Marvel has finally defined the villain’s destiny, after many years. Below, we will tell you all the details, but you should know that this post contains spoilers from volume #4 of the Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin comic.
This comic reveals the fate of Proto-Goblin, after 27 years of his last appearance
Proto-Goblin was introduced into comics in 1997’s Spider-Man, where we see Nels Van Adder agree to be a test subject for the Goblin Formula, and end up being turned into a deformed, red, clawed creature. He then embarks on a quest for revenge against Norman Osborn, and later Spider-Man, though the villain has never had a proper arc until now.
The Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin comic is a flashback to Peter Parker’s early days as Spider-Man, when he encountered the Proto-Goblin. As they duel, the villain notices that his skin seems to be melting away, so he flees into the woods, where he eventually disintegrates, and some Oscorp agents clean up his remains.
After this, Spider-Man claims to have searched for him for hours in the woods, but never found any trace of the Proto-Goblin. With this, Marvel has finally given an explanation as to what happened to the first Spider-Man Goblin, who had been forgotten by fans, revealing what was the fate of the villain, which was unknown for almost 30 years.
By revealing what has happened to the villain, Marvel has given Proto-Goblin a concluding arc that he was owed for more than two decades, and which was never given to him since he had been technically forgotten by fans.
