New logoa whole pantheon of heroes and villains already known or ready to reach the general public and James Gunn at the wheel. Deadpool and Wolverine may have restored the faith of superhero lovers, but the reborn DC Studios will not wait for Superman to be released to take the initiative: as promised, Creature Commandos will serve as the battering ram for Warner’s biggest comic project, and the impact will be later this year.
Taking advantage of the San Diego Comic-Con context, Gunn himself reserved two announcements and, as expected, none had to do with the champion of Metropolis: the new logo that will head each and every one of DC Studios’ projects was revealed, being a profound tribute to the legacy on paper. And, while they were at it, they put it to use by showing the first trailer of this new universe: Creature Commandos. A group of antiheroes that, as you will see, could easily pass for Tim Burton’s Suicide Squad.
What Creature Commandos It is not a coincidence that it resembles the Suicide Squad so much, but rather something very intentional: in addition to being the vision of the series producer, its official name is Task Force M. (the “M” is a reference to monsters) and Amanda Waller herself has them all on a short leash with an implanted device that, at best, knocks them out with an electric shock.
The other reality is that these comic book revisions of Frankenstein, the Bride and the Swamp Creature are the advance guard of DC Studios’ grand plan, given that, despite being an animated production, it is fully integrated with the rest of the films and series produced by Warner and DC. Reserving room for independent works such as The Batman or Joker through the Elseworlds.
What does this mean? Not only is Viola Davis reprising the role of Waller, which she made her own in the Snyderverse, but in the future of DC Studios each and every one of these characters will be portrayed by the same actors in new series, films and video games, and following continuity, what happens will have a direct impact on projects like James Gunn’s Superman and everything related to DC’s Gods and Monsters episode. Which brings us to the other key issue: where and when you can see it Creature Commandos.
DC Studios’ first series and overall production will premiere Next December exclusively on Max (or HBO Max depending on the region), on a date yet to be specified but very well calculated: by then both Joker: Folie à Deux will have been conveniently released in theaters and the Penguin series on the small screen, so the feeling of being a reboot of the universe and a starting point for viewers will be total.
And after that? DC Studios’ next projects according to their announced schedule are both Waller’s series and the second season of The peacemakerwhich is being filmed simultaneously with the new Man of Steel film. In fact, everything will be released on television in order to serve as a springboard for the big day: July 11, 2025, the premiere of the film will take place. Superman by James Gunn and, as the saying goes, the whole initiative will have definitively taken off.
A new dawn for superhero cinema? For now we take it for granted that in December we will have a true marathon of super-monsters.
