The first football match at the Olympic Games ended in chaos. After Argentina managed to draw against Morocco in the sixteenth minute of extra time, spectators stormed the pitch in Saint-Étienne.
The match in Group B was interrupted for about two hours, after which the equalizer was disallowed for offside based on video images and Morocco secured the win in the final minutes (2-1).
2022 World Cup Final Song
Argentina had not made itself popular in France with a video of midfielder Enzo Fernández that he shared after his country won the Copa América. It showed players of the national team singing a derogatory song about French footballers of African descent. The song dates from after the 2022 World Cup final victory against France.
The crowd, including many French Moroccans, turned against the Argentinian team, which for a long time seemed on the way to defeat.
Ajax goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli was passed twice by Soufiane Rahimi, shortly before half-time and soon after the break from a penalty. In the 68th minute Giuliano Simeone did something back, but it was not until fifteen minutes into added time that Cristian Medina finally equalized. This led to objects being thrown from the stands and spectators on the field.
The stands were empty when the match resumed after much confusion about two hours later and Medina’s goal was disallowed. A few more minutes of football were played.
