Sardar Azmoun has five goals and five assists in 44 competitive appearances for Bayer 04 Leverkusen after joining from Zenit St. Petersburg for €2.5 million in the winter of 2021/22. It had been clear for some time that these statistics would probably not change. However, for almost a week now there has been clarity.
Last Monday, Azmoun was absent from the first training session of the 2024/25 summer preparation without an excuse, after having completed the obligatory performance diagnostics the day before. “He was there yesterday, but not today. That was visible – so we need to clarify what is going on,” explained sporting director Simon Rolfes at the time.
It is now known that Azmoun had subsequently deregistered, but by then it was already too late. kicker Leverkusen confirmed last Tuesday that the Iranian would no longer train with the team, but would train individually. Bild reported that the expulsion of the loan returnee was “unavoidable” for coach Xabi Alonso.
It is considered extremely unlikely that Azmoun will get a second chance, especially since Bayer Leverkusen had already previously planned a separation. Where could the 29-year-old, who spent the 2023/24 season with AS Roma in Italy, end up?
The first option seems to be Sevilla FC. The La Liga club was already linked with the signing of Azmoun at the end of May. Now transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has posted on the social media platform X made it clear again that he remains ‘transfer target number 1’ to replace top scorer Youssef En-Nesyri, who is expected to move to Turkey to join Fenerbahce.
While Leverkusen would like to sell Azmoun (market value according to Transfer marketSevilla is initially looking to sign him on loan (€8 million, ed.). According to Romano, both clubs are still in talks, but they still seem to be a long way from reaching an agreement.
