His withdrawal from the presidential racedespite not having caught most Americans by surprise, has caused a political earthquake in the Democratic Party. Its members must now decide whether to align with Biden in his support for Harris, or else a new candidate for the Oval Office. “No surprises”
“It was no surprise,” he admits. Jose Antonio Gurpeguidirector of the Franklin Institute. Gurpegui refers to the first and only debate between Trump and Biden during this election campaign, as inflection point. “Your candidacy has been put forward questioned practically since it was announced in November,” says the expert, recalling that even then “the name of Michelle Obama as a possible candidate or substitute in the event of a possible resignation, as has occurred today.”
Gurpegui has no doubts about who will be Biden’s replacement: “For me the candidate will be Kamala Harrisand the rest of the options there are, from Nancy Pelosi saying that there always has to be some kind of primaries, from the governors of California to the governor of Michiganit seems that they will not come to fruition,” although he points out that in order to emerge as winners of the elections, it will be essential for the Democrats to arrive joined.
It will be essential for Democrats to come together
Otherwise: “It will be a suicide for them (…) and any option that went in that direction would be most harmfuleven if Joe Biden had continued with his candidacy.” Similarly, he believes that the Democrats have options and refers to Kamala Harris as: “The best candidate that Democrats can present,” as it may be key to attract voters that both Biden and Donald Trump missed.
Specifically, the director of the Franklin Institute refers to the female voteaddressing issues such as abortion, women’s rights; youth voting or even the vote of women ethnic minorities. We can only wait: “We will see if it arrives on time or not on time (…) but I have no doubt that there is a game with Kamala Harris (…) as long as the Democrats arrive united“, concludes José Antonio Gurpegui.
