Rome, 20 July 2024 – New State Police crackdown on burglars. The investigators of the Rome Police Headquarters, also through the study and monitoring of the “heat maps”, developed by the UPGSP, through the crime georeferencing system, which provides an indication of the areas most affected by a given phenomenon, have managed to stop another 4 apartment burglars, adding to the numerous recent arrests.
The officers of the VII San Giovanni District intervened in via Acaia following a report of the presence of people inside an apartment. Once on site, they ctwo men were caught red-handed inside the reported house, finding them in possession of various tools suitable for burglary. The two, a 56-year-old and a 60-year-old, both Italian, were also found in possession of 2 gold pins, 3 silver watches, later recognized by the rightful owner. Therefore, they were arrested for attempted aggravated theft.
The State Police officers of the XV Ponte Milvio District, authors of the recent arrests for receiving stolen goods of Georgians, in via Cartesio, checked a suspicious man, ascertaining that he was wanted as he was affected by an order of execution for imprisonment issued by the Attorney General of the Republic at the Court of Appeal of Rome on 9 June 2023, having to serve a prison sentence of 2 years 7 months and 16 days for the crime of attempted aggravated theft committed in Rome in May 2022.
“I don’t steal, I don’t break into houses and I’m not interested in jewels and valuables”. This is what the 50-year-old Georgian man allegedly told the State Police officers at the Vescovio police station when they stopped him, but in reality the information in the investigators’ possession contains much more. In fact, it is to him that the thieves of the capital’s apartments turn to obtain the key in a few days, in exchange for large rewards, which allows them to access with extreme ease the homes of the Romans in order to burgle them. It was following a targeted operation by investigators, who had been on his trail for some time, that put an end to the Georgian’s ‘career’.
In fact, after a series of shadowings, during which the agents of the Vescovio police station havestudied the moves and habits of the foreigner, yesterday, at the end of a stakeout, they intervened and stopped him. It was just after 1:00 PM when the police noticed the suspect parking his car in the area of the Africano neighborhood. Immediately after, backpack on his shoulders, he got out to walk with a quick and decisive step in the direction of a building on Viale Libia.
The 50-year-old, having arrived in front of a door, after having looked around cautiously, exhe took a metal object from his pocket – probably an adulterous key -, he opened it and accessed the inside. The agents intervened immediately, stopping him and searching him, checking the contents of the backpack he had with him, where they found a powerful electric grinder, lock picks, fake blades of ‘European’ type keys and other specific tools.
Identified as a 50-year-old Georgian, the officers then also searched his home, inside which theyor found significant material enclosed in two suitcases, or very modern equipment for duplicating keys, capable of opening the most widespread and sophisticated locks on the market.
Afterwards the man, who has several aliases, was taken to the Vescovio police station and then to the Scientific Police for further checks. And it was precisely following these checks that the agents were able to trace his true identity and discover that he was the recipient of a precautionary custody order in prison for the crime of aggravated robbery. In fact, the man turned out to be the author of an aggravated robbery committed in the Guidonia Montecelio area last April 23. After the checks, the man was reported for possession of tools suitable for burglary and attempted burglary and subsequently transferred to prison in execution of the precautionary custody order issued by the Judicial Authority.
For the sake of accuracy, and to protect those under investigation, we remind you that an accusation is not equivalent to a conviction, that evidence is gathered in court and that the Italian judicial system provides for three levels of judgment.
