Rome, 19 July 2024 – “The terrible massacre of via D’Amelio, 57 days after the attack of Capaci, has constituted the pinnacle of the terrorist strategy conducted by the mafia. With ruthless acts of war, they wanted to bend the State and subjugate society. The institutions and citizens prevented it. The murderers at the head of the criminal organization have been brought to justice, the sacrifice of those who defended legality and freedom has become a symbol of probity and redemption. Now the baton is in the hands of each of us”. This is what the Head of State says Sergio Mattarella In the 32nd anniversary of the death of Paolo Borsellino, Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina, Claudio Traina, which the President remembers “on a day of remembrance and commitment to the Republic”.
“The first thought is addressed to the families of the fallen, to their infinite pain, to the dignity with which, in the face of inhuman mafia violence, they were able to convey the sense of the common good and supported the search for the full truth about the circumstances and the instigators of the attack. This search has been hampered by misdirection. The path to justice has taken a long time and this represents a wound for the communityThe need for truth is irrepressible in a democracy and giving it a positive response remains an essential duty,” urges Mattarella.
“Paolo Borsellino, and with him Giovanni Falconehave dealt decisive blows to the mafia with their work. They have uncovered its plots and demonstrated its weaknesses, leaving a precious legacy, not only for investigations and trials. They taught that the mafia can also be fought in schools, in culture, in the coherence of behavior, in the rigor of institutions, in social life.. These teachings continue to mark the duty of the Republic”, concludes the Head of State.
