On the occasion of the Gaeta stop of the Goletta Verde these days, the mayor Cristian Leccese received a flag to display as a demonstration of the commitment undertaken
Gaeta, 14 July 2024 – On 26 April, through resolution no. 83, the Municipality of Gaeta had joined the memorandum of understanding to support the project entitled “Life Turtlenest”born from the need to adequately protect the new nesting areas of the sea turtle of the Caretta caretta species which, following the increase in sea temperatures caused by climate change, has begun to lay its eggs along the coasts of the western Mediterranean.
The path also aims to evaluate the impact of climate change on the nesting of the species which, due to rising temperatures, is becoming increasingly frequent on our beaches.
The Municipality of Gaeta was therefore awarded the title of “Common friend of sea turtles” and on the occasion of the Gaeta stop of the Goletta Verde these days, the mayor Cristian Leccese received a flag to display as a demonstration of the commitment undertaken to protect these extraordinary animals, symbol of marine biodiversity.
«The adhesion to this initiative – comments the mayor – further confirms how this Administration cares about protecting the environmentof the ecosystem and biodiversity. We are proud to have started this path that leads to the adoption of good practices, which make the needs of economic activities, linked to the use of the beach, coexist with the needs of female turtles.»
The project partners are Legambiente (Italy), Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Italy), the University of Rome La Sapienza (Italy), Universitat de Barcelona (Spain), Fundació Universitària Balmes (Spain), Ente Nazionale della Cinofilia Italiana, Cestmed (France), Basilicata Region (Italy), Puglia Region (Italy), Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Tuscany (Italy), Lazio Region (Italy), Campania Region (Italy), ISPRA- Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Italy).
