The actor of the film Black Noir of The Boys has an insightful answer about a character who resembles him in the film Superman they James Gunn
Following the revelation of a secret character in Superman which looks a lot like Black Noir from The Boysthe Prime Video star weighs in on the DC mystery. The cast of the movie Superman is getting closer to wrapping principal photography as DC Studios prepares to launch the new DC Universe. However, one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the film is the masked character that has been revealed in set photos, which many have commented looks a lot like Black Noir from The Boys.
In a new interview to promote season 4 of The BoysNathan Mitchell, who had seen the Superman set photos of the new character, was asked what he thought most about the DCU figure. Mitchell expressed his excitement at seeing a character who closely resembles Black Noir, and the star of The Boys had some revealing thoughts on what could happen in James Gunn’s Superman movie. The actor expressed how crucial it is that a Superman movie made in 2025 reflects “the context of the current superhero landscape”
Nathan Mitchell: “It was great, I was very surprised. I thought: “Wow, are they going to do a Black Noir version of this movie?” And again, I don’t know exactly what they’re planning. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s a version of Black Noir in this shot we’ve seen. My view is that if you’re going to defend Superman in 2025, you have to defend him in the context of the current superhero landscape.”
“That superhero landscape includes The Boys and The Seven. That’s why I think it’s very smart to compare and contrast and defend Superman in a world where a team like The Seven could exist. I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing they might be doing something like that, and I’m very honored by the possibility that Black Noir could have been an inspiration for a character in a Superman movie.”
Who is the mysterious character in the movie? Superman they James Gunn?
As of this point, Gunn has yet to comment on this mysterious character, as he probably wants to keep it a secret until Superman is set to be released next year. Whoever it is, their identity may become clear in the first trailer for Superman when DC Studios decides he’s ready to be introduced. But until then, there are plenty of theories about who the Black Noir-style character could be from the set photos of Superman.
If the DCU is leaning towards the villains of Superman From the comics, the character could be Neil Quinn, aka Ulysses, who is an enemy of the Man of Steel that has not yet been used in live action. Gunn is known for looking at darker characters from comics, as shown in his trilogy Guardians of the Galaxywhich will surely also be the case for Superman. Ulysses would also make a lot of sense as a figure working for the government, given that set photos show him arresting Superman alongside the military.
Since the character has a U-shaped design on his chest, many believe that he is some variation of Ultraman, who is an evil doppelgänger of Superman from Earth-3. While it seems unlikely that the multiverse angle is being addressed this early in Gunn’s DC Universe, it’s possible that this could be a new interpretation of Ultraman without his multiversal origins. With the movie of Superman Gunn’s role already underway in terms of production, time will tell if there are other potential candidates for the identity of this figure in the story.
