The manga of Jujutsu Kaisen is slowly coming to an end. After several years in Shonen Jump, Gege Akutami wants to close a story that has kept readers in suspense. But before concluding his work, the author wanted to recap everything he has done so far.
During a manga exhibition in Japan, Akutami He talked at length about his beginnings, explaining the changes from the initial draft. Although he even changed the name of the manga, what stood out the most was the change of protagonist, which went from Megumi Fushiguro to Yuuji Itadori for one clear reason: the member of the Zenin clan was too serious to be the main character of the work.
“When Sousen (Jujutsu Kaisen’s original name) didn’t get the green light for serialization, I decided to go back to my desk and do something that would be eye-catching enough for a Shonen magazine this time. As a character, Fushiguro is too cold and serious, but Itadori is more cheerful, so he’s able to react to the events of the manga in a more old-school way, so I swapped them.”
According to Akutami, Megumi’s personality was so cold that the publisher wouldn’t accept him as a protagonist. This is nothing new in Shonen Jump: Naruto, Luffy, Goku or Izuku Midoriya are cheerful and mostly cheerful protagonists, with very positive values, so Itadori fit perfectly into this work.
Still, it was noticeable that Megumi had that aura of protagonist from the beginning. His powers, past, and personality made him a truly important supporting character, so much so that he ended up being vital to the plot during the final arcs of the manga. Jujutsu Kaisen.
