Plug-in hybrid PHEVs differ from full hybrids and mild hybrids: they are different for the simple fact that the lithium-ion battery connected to the electric motor (works in conjunction with the internal combustion engine) can also be recharged via the “plug”, i.e. with the 230 volt electrical power supply also available from a normal power outlet.
Plug-in hybrid cars can travel up to 100 km in purely electric mode. The market is growing in the number of “plug-in cars” that adopt plug-in hybrid technology. Ferrari has also adopted this type of engine on the SF90 Stradale, which guarantees the super sports car an incredible power of 1,000 HP (780 HP from the 4.0-liter V8 thermal engine added to the 220 HP total provided by the three electric motors).
Benefits of plug-in hybrid cars, which ones to choose?
The offer of plug-in hybrid cars is growing because it allows car manufacturers to lower their average CO2 (95 g/km from 2020) and drivers to drive an eco-friendly vehicle without having the range anxiety that happened with the first pure electric EV cars equipped with a battery with a reduced capacity.
Plug-in hybrid cars, advantages
By purchasing a plug-in hybrid car, unlike full hybrids and mild-hybrids, you benefit from a greater incentive that reaches up to 4,000 euros with the new Ecobonus (2,000 without scrapping the car). In fact, PHEVs belong to the 21-60 g/km CO2 range. But to access the bonus the price limit is 45,000 euros (+VAT).

Furthermore, on this type of car the taxation is minimal, in fact they do not pay the road tax for the first 5 years from the first registration and, when they do pay it, the cost is calculated based on the power of the thermal engine. Therefore the power of the electric units is not taxed.
Which plug-in hybrid car should I buy?
There are plug-in hybrid cars on the market for all tastes. If you travel an average of 30/100 km per day, plug-in hybrids are for you, also because if you have the possibility of recharging them at home in the garage with the power outlet, you always travel in electric!
