The Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sônia Guajajara, participated in the 1st Dialogue of Indigenous Peoples of Rondônia, Southern Amazonas and Northwest Mato Grosso, which was attended by more than 220 leaders from different ethnic groups.
The meeting took place in the Lapetanha Village, in the Sete de Setembro Indigenous Land, territory of the Paiter Suruí people in Cacoal, Rondônia. Held on June 27 and 28, it was attended by leaders, chiefs, women, youth, children and spiritual leaders from more than 30 indigenous peoples.
The meeting, which was also attended by the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (FUNAI) and the Special Secretariat for Indigenous Health (SESAI), aimed to solve the problems of the region’s indigenous territories together with the competent bodies and the federal government. It also addressed challenges in several areas, such as indigenous health, education, demarcation, surveillance, protection, inspection, territorial limits, economic alternatives, the National Policy for Territorial and Environmental Management of Indigenous Lands and Territorial and Environmental Management Plans.
The people of the region fight against the advance of agribusiness into their territories and face threats to their lives.
Rondônia recorded the highest number of fires in the last eight years in the first half of this year, according to the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Employees of Ibama, ICMBbio and the Brazilian Forest Service went on strike on Thursday (4), demanding, mainly, the resumption of negotiations, the improvement of working conditions, the restructuring of careers and salary adjustments, among others.
Protecting indigenous territories in Brazil is still a challenge. The demarcation of indigenous lands is still at a standstill. Funai still lacks the human and financial resources to meet all the demand, and the new competition launched will only serve to replace employees who are retiring and who were no longer sufficient to meet all the demand.
One of the demands of the indigenous peoples was the strengthening of Funai’s regional coordination offices (CR), but, as the minister recalled in her speech, the Budget is voted on by Congress.
All
To protect and care for our forests, rivers, indigenous lands and conservation units, it is necessary to strengthen protection agencies, but this battle must also be fought at the ballot box.
It is important to remember this when choosing our candidates. We need representatives who are committed to the planet and future generations. We cannot continue in the opposite direction in the face of this climate crisis.
