The recent PDNS server outage shocked Indonesian citizens. The reason is, the server contains various personal information of residents spread throughout Indonesia. Moving quickly, Kominfo targets PDNS recovery to be completed in the near future. Is that true?
Ministry of Communication and Information Targets PDNS Recovery to be Completed by End of July
Based on the information we received through the meeting of Commission I DPR RI with Kominfo and BSSN which was held Thursday evening (27/06), the working meeting was observed to be heated, urging Kominfo to target the restoration of PDNS so that it is at least completed by the end of next July.
Head of the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), Lieutenant General Hinsa Siburian, criticized that this problem was caused by negligence on the part of Kominfo due to the absence of governance including data backup.
The Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie Setiadi then answered with a prepared recovery strategy, ranging from short, medium to long term.
He explained that Kominfo’s short-term strategy is targeted to run from June 20 to July 30 2024. Where Kominfo will collaborate with BSSN to carry out forensics and assessments by decrypting and strengthening the entire ecosystem on 3 servers in Indonesia, starting from Batam , Surabaya, and Serpong.
Then, the next step that Kominfo will take is preparing a shortlist and recovery of priority services. This recovery will be complete by the end of July. Finally, Kominfo promised to improve SOPs, redeploy tenant services, and evaluate PDNS governance which is scheduled to be completed in mid-August.
Kominfo Says No Place is Safe from Cyber Attacks
Deputy Minister of Communication and Information, Nezar Patria, added that no digital infrastructure is safe from cyber attacks, including the Temporary National Data Center, aka PDNS.
“There is no safe place, there must be awareness like that, for all digital infrastructure,” said Nezar. He also apologized to the public who were disturbed by the incident, while acknowledging that the system was indeed weak.
With all the plans above, Kominfo is targeting implementation to be completed before the end of November 2024. For now, maybe it’s better if we just wait, bro?
