In 2006, Yamaha took a small pioneering role by offering the YCC-S on its touring buffalo FJR1300: a hydraulically/electrically controlled, automated clutch and gearbox. It never became a huge success, but the automatic gearbox has now become well established in motorcycle land and Yamaha is now taking up the challenge again!
Honda has had its popular DCT since 2010, which this year will receive support from the new E-Clutch, and both KTM and BMW have recently revealed that they will soon be introducing a (semi-)automatic gearbox. Yamaha now joins this trio on the same front with the new Y-AMT system: Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission. While the YCC-S was still partly hydraulic, the new system, weighing only 2.8 kilos, is fully electronically controlled. In fact, two electric motors are responsible for coupling and switching. The new technology is also very compact and can therefore be implemented equally well on a sports or touring motorcycle.
Because both clutching and shifting are done electronically, there is no clutch lever and shift pedal. However, it is still possible to shift gears ‘manually’ (MT), but with a kind of paddle shifters on the left of the steering wheel. However, as with the other well-known systems, there is also a fully automatic mode (AT), where in the case of Yamaha you can choose from two switching profiles: D and D+. The first is a kind of touring mode with smooth and relatively low revs, D+ is the sporty mode with faster and higher revs.
As already mentioned, Y-AMT is suitable for several segments, but for the time being Yamaha has left it unclear on which models it will be available and when. Info: www.yamaha-motor.nl
