Panini Comics launches Captain America: The Phantom Army, a comic that combines the classic aesthetics of comics with the most modern techniques
At this point few people will not know the Captain America, one of the most important characters in the world of comics. The interpretation of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in it UCM has allowed the “Capi” achieve great popularity, even outside the circle of comic readers. Rogers, one of the oldest characters in Marvelwas created by Joe Simon y Jack Kirby in 1940. The character was key during the Second World Warwhere he fought alongside the Allies against him Nazism and the Fascism in general.
Although years have passed since that terrible time and the stories of Rogers have been changing, although always fighting for the freedom of the most disadvantaged, from time to time we have returned to that time where the Capi hit the Nazis. Panini Comics brings us one of these stories, set on the eastern front of that conflict, Captain America: The Ghost Armywritten by Alan Gratz and drawn by Brent Schoonover.
A classic but modern story
During the war, the Sentinel of freedom and the young man Buckyare located in Transia, a country located in Eastern Europehelping the Allies in his fight against Nazis. He Capi and his troops are being overwhelmed until the noise of reinforcements makes the Nazis flee But instead of being actual reinforcements, it turns out that the noise was generated by a special unit of the US Army called the “Phantom Army”a unit made up of all types of artists who, using special effects, have the mission of deceiving the fascists at a strategic level.
The war seems to continue its course, but one night, Rogers, Bucky and the rest of the troops are attacked by a real army of ghosts that are impossible to defeat. This paranormal event seems to be related to the Baron Mordo, who, from his castle, seems to be hatching some Machiavellian plan. He Captain America, Bucky and their loyal allies will have to discover what is happening and put an end to this paranormal activity.
Alan Gratz y Brent Schoonover They sign a self-contained story that recreates, both in script and drawing, the most classic comics, but using current techniques from the world of comics. The story is reminiscent of the classic adventures of the 60s/70s, but told in a more fluid and entertaining way, without so much text, giving the impression that the pace does not slow down too much. The script is simple, full of references to the classics of that time, but entertaining and sometimes, that’s what matters in comics, a good time reading, and if on top of that you have the protagonists beating up Nazis, then even better. Gratz does a great job with the script.
Like his partner, Schoonover It recreates that cartoon aesthetic of the most classic stories but using the most modern techniques, and the result is unbeatable. A combination where the past and the present are mixed in a perfect way. Part of this “retro” but current aesthetic is also thanks to the color, the work of Sarah Stern, which just gave it that wonderful antique touch.
