Silas Malafaia is a professional at virtue signaling with the suffering of others. He became a millionaire by giving his followers certificates of good Christian behavior for anyone who demands from small excluded groups an adherence to the literal interpretation of the Bible that no one, I repeat, no one in modern Christianity demands of themselves.
Yes, Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 prohibit homosexuality, but it also prohibits the charging of interest (25:37). Former banker Paulo Guedes has certainly violated the provisions of Leviticus more times than the most productive gay porn actor.
We, as a society, learned that the credit market is an ally of economic growth, and we learned to respect LGBTs. In both cases, we made progress, and I don't think we violated the essence of the gospel.
What was already wrong in the persecution of LGBTs crossed the line of indecency with the bill presented by Sóstenes Cavalcante, the man from Malafaia in Congress, which equates abortion performed after 22 weeks of pregnancy to homicide, mind you, for the situations where the law already allows abortion, such as in cases of rape.
Interruptions at this stage of pregnancy are rare. Most adult women know when they have been raped, they know how to go to the police or the medical center long before this deadline. But children don't always understand that they have been raped. They may not understand the physiological changes of pregnancy and may be embarrassed to tell their parents.
With that, time passes. The risk of a child, after being raped as a child, remaining in prison for their entire youth as a result of Silas Malafaia's decision is growing. It is easy for a Bolsonarian doctor or judge to delay authorization to terminate a pregnancy until the 22-week limit, pushing the child ever closer to a youth in prison that would follow a childhood of abuse.
The plan is this: establish the 22-week mark and start a war, in the courts, in public bodies, in medical councils, to postpone abortions for all raped women until after this deadline.
God knows when human life begins. Neither Malafaia nor I know. Scientists do not pose these questions in the same way as religious people, and the biblical prohibition is less clear than one might think: in general, those who argue that life begins at conception need to stick to verses that are very easy to interpret otherwise.
See how difficult the issue is: according to Congressman Sóstenes' criteria, if you were forced to choose between shooting a newborn baby or two five-month-old fetuses, you should shoot the newborn. Are you sure this would be right?
If you don't have it, stop using this very difficult problem to pose as a convinced Christian. There are many ethical problems for which we do not know the definitive solution. In these cases, the State must, as in modern democracies, establish some criteria and deadlines, leaving each citizen, within these limits, to decide according to their conscience.
And please, leave raped women out of your machinations to elect presidents of the House and Senate, or to blackmail leftist governments in exchange for releasing amendments.
