“When we talk about nutrition we talk about fats, carbohydrates but in reality proteins are the founding bricks of our life, our body and our diet. Proteins which however can be of animal or vegetable origin or come from milk, all present in our Mediterranean diet for centuries.” Thus to Adnkronos Salute the scientific director of the Danone Foundation Institute Lorenzo Morelli on the occasion of the presentation – today in the Chamber (Parliamentary Group Hall) – of the book 'Proteins in the Mediterranean diet'.
“Even if we all talk about the Mediterranean diet – explains Morelli who is also director of the Department of the Catholic University of Piacenza Cremona – and as Italians we are proud of our “most famous” diet in the world, in reality the data proves us wrong: under 20%, just in fact, 13% follow the Mediterranean diet. Hence the idea of taking stock of the situation with a book to try to rediscover a dietary style, the Mediterranean one, which has clear values both for well-being and the prevention of diseases for the individual and for the planet. We must inform Italians better.”
The Istituto Danone Foundation “has had a precise objective for over 30 years – underlines Morelli – to provide information based on solid scientific foundations and real data to combat fake news. For years we have produced volumes for doctors and experts in the sector, today we also want to reach the general public. Furthermore, with this initiative we add a final piece of collaboration with the institutions, precisely to dialogue together for correct nutritional information. We must all together relaunch a virtuous food model that UNESCO has declared an intangible heritage of humanity.”
