The model update for Triumph's Tiger 1200 is not a very extensive one. So subtle in fact, that we included a 2023 model to find out whether the minimal adjustments are worth it.
The biggest difference with the previous model is, just like with the small Tiger (whose valve train has been significantly revised), hidden from view: until 2020, all Triumph three-cylinder engines had a crankshaft offset of 120 degrees, which is usual for a triple. In addition to an even sound, this also ensures smooth engine running. Nevertheless, all Triumph three-cylinder engines also have a balance shaft. However, the 900 and 1200 Tiger models that have appeared since then have a so-called T-plane crankshaft with crank journals offset twice 90 degrees and once 180 degrees.
This makes the engine sound and run a lot rougher. Or with more character, depending on how you look at it. Reportedly, the big triple has a tendency to stall abruptly at very low revs, as is sometimes the case on narrow single tracks, for example. Given the considerable weight and height of the Explorer, this can quickly lead to unwanted sideways movements. Through 'adjustments to the crankshaft, the alternator rotor and the balance shaft, the rotating mass of the engine has been increased', resulting in 'a smoother delivery of engine torque in the lower speed range and better response'.
So far the official version from the British, time to find out for yourself how these adjustments work in practice. In MotoPlus 11/2024 you can of course read what we noticed during the test period, but also what other adjustments Triumph made!
