Helldivers 2 took the world by storm and immediately became one of the most successful video games of 2024, with millions of copies sold and thousands of concurrent users on Steam. Everything was going well, but a recent controversy put an end to the positive streak and forced the director to come forward.
This week, Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony announced that PC players will have to link their Steam and PlayStation Network accounts to enjoy the game. It is a mandatory requirement without exception, so those who do not meet it will be unable to log in and participate in games, even if playing on computers.
Helldivers 2 is the target of a review bombing campaign
Naturally, the decision generated a warm conversation on social networks and forums. Many players were dissatisfied, stating that they are not registered on the PSN and that it is a mistake to force them to create an account. Others argued that the PlayStation service is not available in their countries, so they simply cannot create a profile to play Helldivers 2.
The controversy was reflected in the Steam ratings. In less than 24 hours, the acclaimed multiplayer video game received more than 24,000 negative reviews on Valve's platform. It has a score of 8.1 on Metacritic, but it's likely to drop as complaints pile up.

Arrowhead Game Studios Director Reacts to Negative Helldivers 2 Reviews
Naturally, this controversy did not go unnoticed by the developers. While the moderators of the game's official Discord try to calm the community's discontent and promise fans that their comments will reach Sony, Johan Pilestedt, creative director of the online game and head of the development studio, reacted to the negative reception.
In a publication on his personal social media account, the manager acknowledges that the measure that forces players to connect their PlayStation Network accounts with Steam may bother many, although he points out that the Steam page warned about it
“I understand that linking accounts and signing up for additional services may not be something some would like to do and that should be respected. While Steam always showed the requirements on the game page, I wish they had been clearer with the long-term intention so as not to disappoint any of the divers,” commented Johan Pilestedt.
Helldivers 2 Creative Director Responds to Fan Criticism
Certainly, Helldivers 2's Steam page included a notice warning that a PSN profile would be required, although you can't blame the players who didn't see the yellow box where that information was displayed. Remember that linking accounts was optional at launch due to technical problems, but now it will be a mandatory requirement to log in.
Finally, Johan Pilestedt was surprised by the recent negative reviews and apologized to fans for disappointing them.
“Oh, right in the grades. Well, I guess it's justified. We are sorry for how this all happened. I hope we get through this and regain confidence in providing a great gaming experience. I just want to make great video games!, stated the creative director.
