When Odin first dubbed Thor the God of Thunder, ironically the heir of Asgard was terribly afraid of storms. But despite this, in the comics, Thor would earn this title after being exiled from Midgar, an event that changed his life and that exploded in the first installment, becoming one of the most powerful superheroes in the entire world. UCM thanks to its enormous hidden potential.
Chris Hemsworth's interpretation of Thor contrasts with that of his comic book counterpart, as it is extremely complete. This live-action Thor is a mix of seriousness and a goofy personality, in equal contributions, which ultimately contributes to an extremely likeable character. Without a doubt, he is one of the most intricate characters in the MCU, where complexity and lightness go hand in hand.
However, Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) was a considerable stumble in Thor's story arc. Despite being a carbon copy of a story from his comics, with extreme potential, the film suffers from a chronic problem of its own merits, where every emotional moment is related to a failed comedy.
Now, Marvel star Chris Hemsworth, two years after the release of the feature film, claims that he still cannot forgive himself for this sequel. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the actor reflects on the reason why the fourth installment of Thor received a mixed response, both from critics and audiences. According to Hemsworth, he got carried away and now sees how his “flaws” ended up making the production a “parody.”
I got carried away by improvisation and madness, and became a parody of myself. I couldn't land.
According to the Vanity Fair interview, Hemsworth made clear his feelings of frustration and anxiety when playing one of the most popular characters in this expanding cinematic universe. At times the actor felt as if he were a security guard for the team. He would read some of the other people's lines and think, “Oh, they have much better things. They have more fun”… So he would ask himself: “What is my character doing?” Hemsworth claims that he felt replaceable, because it was just a matter of having the wig, the muscles, the suit and little else.
However, we must make it clear that although Hemsworth is right in stating that Love and Thunder was a failure, he is wrong in stating that it is exclusively his fault, since in reality there were several reasons that led to this million-dollar setback.
The actor's comedic talents were exceptional in Thor: Ragnarok, an installment that feels balanced despite having many eccentric scenes. Furthermore, Hemsworth has been able to precisely channel the character's personality, from the arrogant god on the verge of self-discovery, to the shell of a broken man altered by trauma.
And while Hemsworth may have some regrets about his time with Thor, his MCU co-star Robert Downey Jr. has nothing but high praise, calling his work “a formidable hat trick”:
First of all, Thor as a character was super complicated to adapt, but he and Ken Branagh figured out how to transcend it, make it somehow relatable but divine. Hemsworth is, in my opinion, the most complex character of all the Avengers. He has wit and seriousness, but also restraint, fire and sweetness.
Currently, Hemsworth's future as Thor is unknown, but for now, rumors suggest that he will reprise the role for a fifth installment of the Thor saga. In this feature film, an exciting confrontation with Brett Goldstein's Hercules is expected, in addition to him probably rejoining The Avengers for future installments of the saga.
