For World Superbike, Nicholas D'Addario Spinelli, winner of Race 1 on his debut, is a very new name, but the boy has been on the tracks for quite some time. Born in Abruzzo, Atri (TE), born in 2001, he will turn 23 on 11 June and has been racing since 2010, when he was nine. He took part in the national minibike championships and in 2011 he won the European Minimoto Junior A title. It was only the first, because in 2013 the European MiniGP 50 cm³ title followed and the following year Nicholas moved on to the CIV Pre-Moto 3 125 cm³ 2 times: finished second in 2014 and fourth in 2015.
Success with Moto3
The time had come to move up to Moto 3 and it was worth it because at 15 years old he finished the 2016 championship in second place and the following year he hit the big target by winning the 2017 title; then another second place in 2018 and again the victory of the 2019 Italian championship.
Many would have already been happy like this but Spinelli is not someone who is satisfied and from his first steps on two wheels he intended to make his way, in the sense of making a career. As he grew older he acquired a physique more suited to large displacements than to small 125 cm³ and so he moved up to Supersport Next Generation.
The Supersport World Championship
In 2022 he achieved the Italian title and in the same year he won his first world point, again in the Supersport category: he replaced the injured Filippo Fuligni and with the D34G Racing Ducati Panigale V2 in the Misano round he crossed the finish line of the Race 1 in 15th place, while in Race 2 he finished 21st.
At that point he decided to compete in the World Championship on a permanent basis and in 2023 he raced the entire Supersport championship series with the Yamaha YZF R6 of the VFT Racing team, also expanding to the MotoE championship in the ranks of the Pons Racing 40 team alongside Mattia Casadei . The balance was 64 points in the Supersport world championship, 14th overall with second place in Race 1 at Phillip Island as the flagship, while with electric motorcycles he reached the podium four times and above all he achieved a victory in the Misano race , finishing the championship in sixth place.
This year in the MotoE world championship
This year the commitment is in the MotoE world championship among the ranks of Team Tech3 E-Racing, teammate of Alessandro Zaccone. He made his debut in the Superbike World Championship as a replacement for Danilo Petrucci, the victim of two fractures to his jaw and one to his right collarbone while training on the cross bike. “I'm very sorry for Danilo's accident and I hope he gets better soon – he declared – but I'm really happy with this call. Racing with the big names in Superbike is a dream come true, I will do my best to do well and enjoy this experience. A big thank you to Marco Barnabò and the whole team who still believes in me after the season we had together.” The result went beyond the wildest expectations and now, after having won Race 1 of the Superbike World Championship in Assen, we will have to see if his career can have a sudden acceleration. He played his part by demonstrating a coolness and control worthy of a seasoned professional. We'll see about the rest.
